Blog #5---Classrooms for Sale

After reading the article “Classrooms for Sale”, I think on the companies’ side, they just want to make profit. I am not surprise the companies have a contract with schools because I believe schools and students are big customers to them. If they want to develop their enterprises, they will in no wise give up any chances to get the business with schools. On the schools’ side, they also want to save money for their office supplies and classroom furniture, etc. I consider that if a company offers a good deal, the school would like to sign an agreement to save money. People think schools should not close the business, and they have to concentrate on education. However, today, we live in a market economy, and we can’t live without commercial activity. Finally, according to the essay, it’s hard for students to choose the marketing brands because they cannot change channel. For students, this is not fair. Are they useful stuff to students or just about money? Therefore, I think schools have the responsibility to the students because the primary mission of the school is still teaching. It is not simply a matter of deciding how much you want to save or make.

Blog #4------Talking about Social Action Project

This week in the class, we discussed the social project which I’m not sure what I will go to do. I heard some interesting ideas such as going to animal shelter, and volunteering food bank or doing something on the campus. For one thing I am curious about animal shelter, why the pets were abandoned? Because of as a foreigner, I read many articles about pet culture in American family. The articles all talk about people love the pets because they are just like their members of the household. In my hometown, I used to volunteer at orphanage. I don’t know, are there any orphanages in our area? Anyway, I like to try something new, and I would really like to do something significant that can help me to know more about our society.

Blog #3

In this week, we still discussed about the freedom, but just moved to new area, the academic freedom. According the essay that I read, I think instructors can share their viewpoints in the classes because of academic freedom; also, they have more experience for the course. For that reason, they can sum up their experience and lessons. That will contribute students improving their study. On the other hand, every instructor has own style. They might have some different personal opinions that will argue with others. In the university, we are just purely academic discussion and exchange. I think that we don’t want to personalize the issue. Furthermore, if instructors force their student to believe what they believe, I consider that they will totally make mistake because they cannot brainwash their students. A teacher’s aim is to impart knowledge and educate people. I believe that’s why we go to school to study; otherwise we just stay at home to self-study.

Reflection 2

We have discussed the right of a free speech in this week. Freedom is our birthright. People have their rights to do and say what they want. Today, some use their free speech to attack others in many areas such as school and community. It’s true that they have freedom because everybody is at liberty to air his views. On the other hand, I think that people will find it difficult to explain away their use of such offensive language. Moreover, everything has own rule. For example, be even as small as in the sports, the player was booked by the referee for foul play. I believe nothing can be accomplished without norms or standards. Everyone wants to have their own freedom, and it’s easy to abuse one’s freedom; however, no freedom is absolute. If without rules, we’ll be savage.

Blog 1

I like critical thinking because I believe that critical thinking is very important skill in our lives. However, my first language is not English, so it was very difficult for me to use English in critical thinking. Anyway, that’s why I take English 5 to overcome my problem. Because I love Lauren’s teaching style, I take her English 5 in fall semester. For the SAC, I joined a group to talk about the two essays that we read in this week. For the topic of free speech and pornography, the issues which they make people think deeply. I believe everyone is entitled to his own opinion. During the time, I was very enjoyable listening to my partners’ opinions. Even though I didn’t understand some words what they said, I still got some ideas from them which help me to realize the two essays.
